During last year’s WoodExpo 2011 at the New England Home Show, we featured a blog on Kevin Mack Fine Furniture. Kevin is located in Malden, Massachusetts and can also be found online at www.kevinmackfinefurniture.net. The Mack attack is back at the 2012 show with 5 new fantastic entries showing off his creativity and woodworking expertise. The main goal for all 5 pieces was to create 3 color tones in each piece.
The Side Board commonly known as a Buffet or Server is made of a tiger maple interior with a walnut exterior. The door panels are quartersawn straight grain core pine. The cross grain veneer holds the expansion and contraction for strength.
Kevin’s 3rd piece is a Pagoda Cabinet with Asian aesthetics made with walnut and a saved “firewood” burl built with the philosophy of Yin and Yang or opposite styles in mind. The swing doors have 2 pieces of glass with copper foil in between. In addition the top bread board cut ends are made from one piece of air dried walnut. Again note the 3 color tones making up this cabinet.
Kevin’s chair also has a 3 color tone style with white oak, cherry and the added leather tone for the back and seat cushions.
The 5th piece may be used multi-functionally as a foot or sitting stool. The 3 tone colors designed into this sturdy item are mahogany, white oak with a Danish corded wrapped top. As shown in the video, Kevin learned to make this corded weave with the assistance of The Caner’s Handbook from Woodcraft.
We sat down with Kevin at the WoodExpo and talked about each of these pieces,
