Woodcraft Celebrates 50-Year Partnership with Swiss Toolmaker Pfeil

Woodcraftleading American woodworking retailer and world-famous pfeil Swiss toolmaker are celebrating a milestone – their 50th anniversary as international business partners.

“Pfeil’s dedication to making tools of unsurpassed quality that meet the needs of serious woodcarvers first attracted Woodcraft to the Swiss manufacturer and continues to make Woodcraft proud to be the exclusive US distributor of pfeil tools,”…Woodcraft president Jody Garrett

Based in Langenthal, Switzerland, pfeil opened its doors in 1902 as a fabricator of cutting tools.  Carving tools were added to the product line in 1942, and the tools’ superior quality soon attracted a following among professional and amateur carvers in nearby Brienz, a world-famous carving center and home to the Brienz Wood Carving School.

Today Brienz students are still using pfeil tools and will have about 100 tools by the time they graduate.  Working with the Brienz instructors and professional woodcarvers from throughout the world, pfeil continues to develop, produce and expand its line of carving tools, using state-of-the art technology and time-tested manufacturing methods.

Pfeil’s manufacturing process involves forging all the tools using chrome vanadium steel, a special alloy, made to pfeil’s specifications, that combines elasticity with unsurpassed edge-holding properties.  Blades are hardened to exacting tolerances and tempered to HRC 59-61, depending on the purpose of the tool, and inside sweeps are very finely ground and polished.  Octagonal hardwood handles offer improved control and support.

Still a family-owned business, Felix Zulauf is the third-generation owner and operator, and his daughter, Christine is also actively involved in the business.

Woodcraft, the industry leader in providing a wide variety of top quality products, educational opportunities and one-on-one guidance to woodworkers of all skill levels, has expanded its pfeil offering to more than 500 tools since the partnership began.
